Holistic health is not a new concept. However, holistic health care in assisted living can be hard to find. Holistic health care approaches care of residents by treating the whole person, not just the symptoms and diseases they have.
Highgate at Temecula, a new Temecula Senior Housing provider, is scheduled to open in August and with it comes their unique holistic approach to care.
**What does holistic care look like?**
With a holistic approach to care, the mind, body and spirit are considered equally important. Holistic nursing care dates back to the days of Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing. Though modern medicine has come a long way since the days of Florence Nightingale, what hasn’t changed is the healing power of touch, smell and other forms of holistic medicine.

Here are a few ways Highgate at Temecula is bringing holistic care to its assisted living and memory care residents.
**Aromatherapy**
Aromatherapy is the use of natural oils to enhance well-being. It’s become a trusted tool, used at major healthcare systems across the U.S such as [Fairview Health Services](https://www.minnpost.com/mental-health-addiction/2016/07/breathe-breathe-out-patients-find-aromatherapy-helps-reduce-anxiety-) and [Cleveland Clinic](https://health.clevelandclinic.org/2016/06/aromatherapy-can-help-ease-joint-pain/). **Advocacy**
Highgate’s commitment to holistic care also includes making sure the medications residents take are right and necessary. Highgate care team members will advocate with families and physicians to create and provide a personalized program of care for each resident.
**Hydration and Nutrition**
Whether managing diabetes, addressing poor appetite because of Alzheimer’s or dementia, or lowering blood pressure, what we eat can have a significant impact on our health.
Highgate at Temecula offers a unique dining program that utilizes vitamin waters, and iced teas infused with fruits (rather than added sugars) to keep residents hydrated. All saturated fats have been eliminated by using extra virgin olive oil and there is no shortage of fresh fruits and vegetables on the Highgate menu.
