Holistic health is not a new concept. However, holistic health care in assisted living can be hard to find. Holistic health care approaches care of residents by treating the whole person, not just the symptoms and diseases they have.
Highgate at Temecula, a new Temecula Senior Housing provider, is scheduled to open in August and with it comes their unique holistic approach to care.
What does holistic care look like?
With a holistic approach to care, the mind, body and spirit are considered equally important. Holistic nursing care dates back to the days of Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing. Though modern medicine has come a long way since the days of Florence Nightingale, what hasn’t changed is the healing power of touch, smell and other forms of holistic medicine.
Here are a few ways Highgate at Temecula is bringing holistic care to its assisted living and memory care residents.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the use of natural oils to enhance well-being. It’s become a trusted tool, used at major healthcare systems across the U.S such as Fairview Health Services and Cleveland Clinic. It can reduce anxiety and pain, boost mood and appetite and promote sleep. Ask about our signature, hand-crafted aromatherapy scents!
Massage
Massage therapy offers pain relief and can reduce anxiety and disruptive behaviors. A study using slow-stroke back massage found that physical expressions of agitation such as pacing, wandering and resisting decreased when slow-stroke massage was applied.
Massage combined with aromatherapy is particularly beneficial for older adults. Massage helps sooth anxiety or agitation and can help decrease stress.
Spa Baths and Meditation
Highgate at Temecula offers a unique spa bath experience complete with heated towels, a Highgate bath robe, and signature aromatherapy scents. Residents enjoy being pampered in this peaceful and relaxing environment.
The Spa also creates a quiet and peaceful environment to meditate. Meditation can relieve stress, help alleviate pain, and more. In a study at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, researchers also found that meditation (like massage) can help reduce stress and may also slow Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Advocacy
Highgate’s commitment to holistic care also includes making sure the medications residents take are right and necessary. Highgate care team members will advocate with families and physicians to create and provide a personalized program of care for each resident.
Hydration and Nutrition
Whether managing diabetes, addressing poor appetite because of Alzheimer’s or dementia, or lowering blood pressure, what we eat can have a significant impact on our health.
Highgate at Temecula offers a unique dining program that utilizes vitamin waters, and iced teas infused with fruits (rather than added sugars) to keep residents hydrated. All saturated fats have been eliminated by using extra virgin olive oil and there is no shortage of fresh fruits and vegetables on the Highgate menu.
