Highgate Shares Crafts for Senior to Do at Home

Crafting isn’t just about creating a scrapbook or making holiday decorations. Research shows that arts and crafts have numerous health and mental benefits for seniors.

Why Crafts Are Key to Successful Aging

Engaging in arts has benefits for all individuals but especially for older adults. In a study published in the Journal of Aging Studies, researchers identified six features of successful aging:

  1. A sense of purpose
  2. Interactions with others
  3. Personal growth
  4. Self-acceptance
  5. Autonomy
  6. Health

Creative activities, such as painting, knitting, and writing, play a vital role in aging well by contributing positively to each of these features.

For example, Mark was recently diagnosed with early-stage dementia, which led to depression and anxiety. But when he picks up a paintbrush, he uses the different colors to express his emotions. When his wife comes home from work, he shows her what he’s created and shares how he feels. He came to find that painting didn’t just fill time during his day — it gave him a sense of meaning and purpose.

Other research shows that art can reduce the depression and anxiety that are often symptomatic of chronic diseases, facilitate the mind-body connection that supports healing and recovery both psychologically and physiologically, and promotes active engagement in life.

Even if your loved one’s mobility is limited or they struggle with memory loss or cognitive impairment, they can participate in fun craft activities. When it comes to arts and crafts, there is rarely one right way to do something, so you can adapt it to your loved one’s needs and encourage them to experiment with different artistic styles and media.
