The decision to move to an assisted living community is a big life transition for your aging parent. They may fear that they have to give up their independence and their own personal space. When really, it’s the opposite – residents at assisted living communities gain a new sense of independence and meaning of life. They no longer have to ask their family members for a ride or worry about a cooking accident.
It’s one thing to talk about the move, but experiencing the community before moving can make the transition easier. Try out a program or attend an event with your loved one and encourage them to participate in the activity. You could also have your loved one try a respite stay, which is a short-term stay at the community. They can participate in activities, eat in the dinning room and experience what it’s really like to be a resident.
When your aging parent can experience the community before moving, the transition process will be easier for them.
